1.) No smoke.

Buy an Electric Fireplace this Winter – Wood burning fireplaces release cancer causing agents and dangerous fumes into your home, such as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. Inhalation of these fumes can be dangerous to your family and pets. Electric fireplaces, however, have zero emissions and thus, zero harm to your family and pets. Those inflicted with allergies and medical conditions such as asthma can find comfort and convenience in any one of our electric fireplaces. Even switching to woods that are supposed to produce higher heat and less smoke still contribute to deforestation and still produce harmful smoke that reduces the air quality in your home. Long gone are the days when your whole house smelled like smoke after the use of a fireplace for a few short hours. With an electric fireplace, you can use the fireplace without the harmful effects of the smoke and without the smell of smoke permeating throughout your entire home and seeping into your carpets, rugs, couches, clothing and beds.

Ted with Plano Texas Handyman can install a great electric fireplace with a magnificent mantle, back drop and all electrical apparatuses for as little as $2500. 2.) Energy efficient.

Electric fireplaces are one of the most efficient ways to heat a room, which in turn, reduces energy costs. Electric fireplaces heat rooms faster and more efficiently than real wood burning fireplaces do. Since heat rises, traditional chimney fireplaces let all the heat out through the chimney. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, “traditional fireplaces lose over 90 percent of the heat of the fire out of the chimney along with much of the heated air in the room.” Since drafts come in through the chimney, your already heated room becomes cold again after a few gusts of freezing air come down the chimney. With an electric fireplace, rooms warm up quickly and stay warm throughout the entire use. LED technology is also incorporated into each of our fireplaces, and consumes less energy than regular incandescent bulbs. The normal lifespan of an LED bulb is 50,000 hours and contains no mercury, which helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and costs much less to operate. Producing approximately 90% less heat than an incandescent bulb, the LED bulb stays cool to the touch. Buy an Electric Fireplace this Winter

3.) Low maintenance.

Having the ambiance and warmth from an electric fireplace is much easier to enjoy when there is little to no maintenance involved. With an electric fireplace, there is no soot or ash to clean up and no need for chimney cleaning, which on average costs $200-$300. No firewood is needed to harness the heat of an electric fireplace, which means no more chopping or buying wood and no more storing of wood in a dry place. Not to mention, the forests will be pretty happy with you too, as there is no deforestation involved in enjoying the flame of an electric fireplace. Additionally, with an electric fireplace, there is no need to get down on your hands and knees or bend over in uncomfortable positions to light or tend to a fire. With an electric fireplace, you can just sit back and relax and use the remote to control the fireplace from across the room. That being said, you probably aren’t going to be able to have an electric fireplace in every single room in your home, so you still may want to look at this site and see what additional heating options you could have. Save on Heating Cost with an electric fireplace

4.) Cost Less.

The costs associated with installing and maintenance of traditional fireplaces tends to be outrageous. That is, until electric fireplaces came into the mix. For wood-burning fireplaces, expect to pay anywhere from $7,000-$10,000 or more on installation, along with the costs of chimney inspection, chimney cleaning, wood, and the lost heat that escapes from the chimney. Gas fireplace units run around $2,500 for the basic materials, along with another $2,500 for installation and finishing. Gas fireplaces also require annual service checks plus a chimney inspection, which can run from $100-$200. Electric fireplaces are the least expensive option as far as fireplaces go. Zone heating saves money- allowing you to lower the over-all temperature of your home by 10-15 degrees, heating only the room you’re in. This concept reduces the use of wasted energy and could save you up to 10% on your energy bills. Gas and wood burning fireplaces actually work the opposite of zone heating- creating a draft effect when lit that actually pulls heat out of the home. With an electric fireplace, there is no chimney cleaning, no service checks, and no costly installation fees- just plug it in and enjoy. Buy an Electric Fireplace this Winter

5.) Anyone can enjoy an electric fireplace.

Renters and those living in apartments, condos, small homes and even recreational vehicles (RVs) seldom get to enjoy the warmth and ambiance of a fireplace. With electric fireplaces, anyone can enjoy the dancing flames in any room of their home. Since there is no need for a chimney, electric fireplaces can be placed in any room of the home on any level of the home to provide the calming environment that an electric fireplace provides. 6.) Longer Lifespan.

Electric Fireplace

Electric fireplaces have the longest lifespan out of its wood burning and gas burning counterparts. Because electric fireplaces are not a combustible energy resource, electrical fireplaces are not susceptible to rust and corrosion. Electric fireplaces can be used for several years on end and still look as new as the first day you bought it. Buy an Electric Fireplace this Winter

7.) Easy Installation.

One of the best things about electric fireplaces is the ease of installation. You can either do it yourself or just call a professional from companies like like TSS Home Comfort (tsshomecomfort.com) who can do the job for you. Remember that compared to electric fireplaces, wood burning and gas fireplaces are costly, time consuming, and just a hassle to install.

8.) Options are abundant with electric fireplaces.

Electric fireplaces allow a plethora of styles and options that are bound to please even the pickiest consumer. Electric fireplaces come in traditional, contemporary, and modern styles to match modern looks and architectural styles. Electric fireplaces are built in to beautiful mantels and media consoles, allowing for extra storage in a stylish way. Electric fireplace inserts can also be installed in already existing fireplaces. Wall mounted units, corner units, and compact units allow electric fireplaces to work in any space and any décor, and can be moved around from room to room whenever you desire. Electric fireplaces can also be placed in locations that don’t normally allow for fireplaces, such as basements. Electric fireplaces also allow the user to be in complete control of the flame effects, such as brightness, flame speed, flame color, and much more, depending on the features of the electric fireplace insert you choose. 9.) Fireplace Safety.

Our electric fireplaces feature an automatic shut-off timer function, allowing you to set the timer from 30 minutes up to 9 hours. You can set the timer and live worry free knowing that the entire unit will power off once the timed cycle is complete. The shut-off timer function reduces the risk of fires resulting from the overheating of electronics. Although electric fireplaces produce enough heat to warm a room 400 square feet and up, they remain cool to the touch, therefore reducing the risk of injuries and burns, making electric fireplaces safe for kids and pets. If you need help along the way, we can connect you with the right garage contractors near you!

Step one: Cleaning
To truly design and create the best man cave possible, you need a blank canvas. Many of us use the garage to store bikes, winter clothes, drinks, cleaning supplies, etc. Well, if you’re going to use this garage to the fullest, you need to get organized. Remodel Your Garage Mancave

Rummage through all the junk you have in your garage and make sure each item is something you and family needs. If not, sell it on eBay or throw it out. For the items you do need, you better get smart at organizing. Move it to the basement, below the sink or in the laundry room. Do whatever you can to clear out the space before you turn it into the garage man cave everyone will be talking about. Once you’ve got it all clean and tidy, you might want to make a few changes to the garage exterior. Perhaps you need to re-paint the walls or maybe you’ve been looking at cupolas for sale. Any exterior touches like these will need to be done before the insulation process begins.

Consideration two: Insulation
If you’re going to be spending every Sunday in this man cave watching football, then you better have it insulated. That means you need the floors, walls, ceiling and garage door insulated. Make sure to call FL garage services to schedule an appointment for installation home.

No one said this was going to be easy or cheap. According to our insulation installation cost estimator, most homeowners pay $1,289 for insulation. However, this price is the average of all insulation projects around the house, including the attic. You can expect garage insulation to be less. Garage Remodel, Garage Renovation.

One way to save money is by installing the garage door insulation yourself. I mapped out all the steps in How To Insulate A Garage Door. Remodel Your Garage Mancave

Step three: Painting
The insides of garages are not built with design flair. Man caves, on the other hand, require some color and design. That is why your new garage man cave needs a new coat paint on all the walls.

Garage storage cabinets

I don’t care if it’s red, blue, green or even white, if you’re converting a garage into man cave, it needs paint. If you need help deciding, make sure you read Popular House Paint Colors For 2014. Garage Remodel, Garage Renovation.

Beware, painting an entire garage is a lot of work. There are professionals who specialize in garage painting. Click here to connect with up to four professional painters for free. Remodel Your Garage Mancave

Step Four: Lighting
Most garages have one light installed, but when you’re hosting poker night or your next fantasy football draft, you need to illuminate the room.

Try incorporating lights that match your style. If you’re going with an industrial look, look for pendants lights that match the color scheme. If you want a more modern touch, go with recessed lights.

Installing your own lighting can be tricky. If you have an attached garage, the project is a bit easier, but if you have a detached garage, you may want to find a professional electrician.

Step 5 : Flooring
For obvious reasons, the standard garage floor can get cold and unwelcoming, two feelings you would never want for your garage man cave. Concrete floors will not help the situation. If there is brick you can refurbish it by doing a dairy brick repair; it will give your flooring a great look and feel.

You could add floorboards or even carpet in certain areas (very risky though). Alternatively, you could buy large area rugs, but if you really want your man cave to be the talk of the town, spend the extra cash on a comfortable flooring option.

Protection

These are valuable items and after you show off your unbelievable man cave, all your neighbors will be talking about it. Make sure you purchase special garage door locks. This way, friends and neighbors will need your code to open the garage.

Likewise, make sure you put a deadbolt on the back door (if your garage has one). For more protection, you could also extend your security system.

Furniture
Now that we have the basics out of the way, it’s time to get into the fun stuff. As I noted in 10 Must-Have Items for the Ultimate Man Cave, a recliner is the No. 1 essential item all man caves need. Remodel Your Garage Mancave

The age-old picture of a man drinking a beer on his recliner in his man cave has not died. However, the modern man cave has evolved and you need comfortable seating for all your friends. Whether you add a sectional, a huge leather couch, multiple recliners or even bar seats, make sure you have enough seating for you and all your guys.

Bar & Fridge
The man cave is supposed to be convenient and it surely won’t be if you have to run inside every time you want a drink or another sandwich. If you have space, try to build your own bar in the corner of your new man cave garage. Leave space and electrical outlets for a mini fridge or a larger one if you can fit it.

Believe me when I say that without a fridge, your friends will not enjoy this man cave. Garage Remodel, Garage Renovation.

Memorabilia
No man cave can be complete without its fair share of sports memorabilia. If you have always wanted a place to show off that Derek Jeter ball or a wall to hang that LeBron James jersey, your man cave is it.

If you’re not into sports, add movie posters, pictures of the kids or anything that makes you happy. It’s your man cave. Be sure to add all the personal flair you want!

Conclusion
Garages are the perfect location for a man cave. Itq separates the home and your home within your home. It gives you the freedom you demand after a long week. Now that you know what you need, go out and start building or designing your own garage man cave. You could also consider one of the metal garage kits if you wanted to expand your garage, I know I want to! Remodel Your Garage Mancave

New Year Home Improvement Projects

New Year Home Improvement Projects – It happens every January. You walk down your street and discover that people have called someone like this skip bin hire sydney company and are getting ready to make some changes. 1. Install Garage Organization Systems

Why it’s popular: Getting organized is probably the top New Year’s resolution of home improvement enthusiasts. What’s great about starting out with the garage is that the area can then serve a workshop for other projects. Plus, there are just tons of options to choose from in home improvement stores. Plus garage organization means you can organize your Christmas decorations in a logical manner. Overhead storage, Wall systems, Attic renovations are all useful and economic renovations. New Year Home Improvement Projects

2. Update Lighting

Why it’s popular: Again, because there are so many great options to select from. Home owners can add recessed lights, spotlights, ceiling fans (with light fixtures), under cabinet lights… the list of interesting styles of lights available looks to continue to grow in 2019. My personal favorite for really making an impact statement adding state of the art LED lighting with adjustable color temperature and colo. They can be installed in less than a day and they bring sunlight directly into the home, but they have the profile of a recessed light, so they won’t draw too much focus in the room. New Year Home Improvement Projects

3. Purchase Standby Home Generator

Why it’s popular: Ranging from $800 to $10,000, depending on the size, these were selling out all over the country when Superstorms hit so are still fresh on the brain for many. For ease of use you can choose to have a manual transfer switch installed in your electric panel so the generator can run your house directly, instead of having to lay out a web of extension cords, just ask the technicians to set up when you first get your generator installation. Standby generators or portable generators like the ones at Enstorageinc can make your life convenient and protect you from devastating power outages.

4. Replace Doors

Why it’s popular: Fresh start. The beginning of year always has people thinking about ways to make their home more energy efficient and increase curb appeal. . Air leaks from your old doors are taxing on your HVAC and expensive on your utility bills. And the more work your HVAC does, the more damaging it can be to your system. If you notice any problems, then looking for a company similar to One Hour Heating & AC will be in your best interest, as this will allow for the problem to get resolved at a quicker rate, as well as potentially reducing your utility bills too. Alongside this, replacing the old with new materials and solid seals will save you money in the long run and improve the look of your home. This will take from a weekend to a week to complete, depending on the size of your home, but the benefits will last for decades. New Year Home Improvement Projects

How to Choose Video Surveillance for your Business

Why Get Home Security Cameras

How to choose video surveillance for your Business.  Security is imperative for any business; after all, how can you be profitable if you can’t protect your assets? Luckily, video surveillance systems are more intelligent and effective than ever. The best cameras now offer computer-like functions and features, like motion sensors and automatic mobile notifications. Some even let you automatically contact law enforcement instantly if need be. Technological development has also lead to more efficient ways of managing recording and storage, as well. Now small business owners have access to immensely powerful surveillance systems at relatively affordable prices.

Call Plano Texas Handyman, Your expert in video surveillance systems for business. Call us at 214-507-3415 or visit our website for more details. How to choose video surveillance for your Business. You can get more details on security features at our Security Camera website page from Plano Texas Handyman.

When it comes to buying and implementing a new system, most vendors allow for a large degree of customizability, meaning you can tailor a system to your business’s specific needs. Whether you need a widespread system that can cover multiple locations or just a few cameras to watch your storefront, there’s a solution for everyone. Not sure where to start? Here’s our 2018 video surveillance buyer’s guide to help break down the component parts of video surveillance systems.

Benefits of a Surveillance System

Before diving into the details, it’s important to note the many benefits offered by a video surveillance system. Not only can surveillance cameras deter criminals and help law enforcement quickly catch any would-be thieves, but these systems can also improve the accountability of your employees, help you monitor productivity and sometimes even reduce your insurance premiums. Video Surveillance technology has definitely improved leaps and bounds from the systems of the older days. With newer innovations coming in, there are many options and types of surveillance mechanisms that a business can choose from, depending on the needs. While the up-front costs of installing a video surveillance system can seem a little steep, the long-term payoff and the peace of mind may well be worth the expense.  How to choose video surveillance for your Business.

IP Cameras vs. Analog Cameras

There are two primary types of cameras that can be wired into a video surveillance system: internet protocol (IP) cameras and the traditional analog cameras. IP cameras are the more modern iteration of analog cameras, and while the individual cameras tend to be a little more expensive, they offer a number of features that analog cameras do not. Here’s a look at the differences between the two types of camera.

You can get more details on security features at our Security Camera website page from Plano Texas Handyman.

Resolution

IP cameras are far more powerful than analog cameras, usually shooting footage of between 1 megapixel and 5 megapixels. That makes for incredibly clear image quality, especially compared to the more grainy analog footage, which runs around one-half of a megapixel. IP cameras generally have a larger field of vision than analog cameras.

Video analytics

IP cameras also have additional features that analog cameras don’t offer, such as video analytics, which allow for mobile notifications and automatic recording if there is movement within the camera’s field of vision. This is particularly useful for times when your business is closed and you want to know if someone is moving around inside the premises. You can configure the system to flag events like this and send notifications directly to your smartphone, along with recorded footage of the event. Some systems also offer a direct, one-touch connection to local law enforcement.

Network Video Recorders

In addition, IP cameras are compatible with network video recorders (NVRs), which offer several other benefits over the older digital video recorders (DVRs) that this guide will cover. In short, NVR records higher-quality video and allows for systems to be scaled up much more easily than can be done with DVR. For more information on video recorders, see the section below.  How to choose video surveillance for your Business.

PoE Switches

IP cameras can also be connected to what is known as a “power over Ethernet” (PoE) switch, which both sends data from the camera and provides power to it. Analog cameras, on the other hand, require a switch to run the signal from the camera as well as a separate power source, meaning a more complex setup and more wires. PoE switches are also generally regarded as a more secure way to transmit data.

Comparable System Cost

While IP cameras are generally more expensive than their analog counterparts, the total cost of a full IP system tends to be slightly lower than that of a comparable analog system. Since IP cameras have a wider field of vision, as well, an IP system can often work with fewer less cameras than an analog system.

Digital Video Recorders vs. Network Video Recorders

All of the cameras in a given system require a central video recorder in order to transmit and archive the footage they are capturing. DVRs evolved from the older VCR models, while NVRs represent the next step in the evolution of video recording technology. Here’s a side-by-side look at how DVRs and NVRs compare.

Resolution of recordings

DVRs generally offer what is known as D1 resolution, which is the traditional video quality used in closed-circuit television systems. D1 equates to a resolution of 720 x 480, which is considered standard resolution.  How to choose video surveillance for your Business.

NVRs, on the other hand, can record in 1080p, which is high-definition; it offers a significant improvement in video quality over the DVR system. For comparison purposes, 1080p equates to a resolution of 1920 x 1080. This results in a much clearer image.

Camera Connections

Connecting analog cameras with a DVR system is done by way of directly plugging a BNC cable from the DVR into the camera. To connect more cameras to the DVR system, you need additional cables. DVR systems are difficult to scale up because once every BNC connection is occupied by a camera, you need to purchase an entirely new DVR before adding another camera to the system. DVRs also require that the connected cameras be in close proximity to the recorder; otherwise, the video quality begins to degrade.

The NVR eliminates these problems, because it is instead connected directly to a network. IP cameras that are connected to the same network, usually by way of a PoE switch, are then able to transmit footage to the NVR. Systems based around an NVR are much easier to scale up than DVR systems, simply because they can accept a new camera once it is added to the network. In the worst case, all that would be required is an additional PoE switch. Some IP cameras are also wireless and can transmit footage to the NVR over Wi-Fi. There are no proximity limitations so long as a camera is connected to the same network as the NVR. The largest downside to an NVR system, however, is that not every IP camera will work with every NVR. So you’ll need to know whether your cameras will be compatible with a given video recorder before buying.   How to choose video surveillance for your Business.

Hybrid Video Recorders

Hybrid video recorders (HVR) are video surveillance systems that run both IP cameras and analog cameras. The versatility of these systems makes them desirable; if you’re upgrading an old system and don’t want to do away with all of your old analog cameras, for example, an HVR can help you make the transition and prepare for a fully IP system in the future.

What to Look for When Choosing a System

Your Cameras

Resolution: This is one of the most important considerations when selecting a camera. For a sharp image, you’ll want a camera that can shoot at least in 720p high definition, which means an IP camera. If you want to guarantee that your camera will have a clear, identifiable image, you don’t want to cut corners here.

You can get more details on security features at our Security Camera website page from Plano Texas Handyman.

Frame rate: This is another key aspect of a camera – the higher the frame rate, the smoother the video. Video is simply a series of still images stitched together to create a motion picture. The lower the frame rate, the less frequently a still is taken; this results in choppier footage. You’ll want to consider the frame rate of the camera you purchase before deciding. For reference, “real time” is typically measured as 30 frames per second.

Models: There are a number of different types of security cameras out there. Some of the more common ones are bullet cameras, which are the rectangular boxes you might see protruding from a wall; dome cameras, which are often attached to a ceiling and housed in a tinted cover; and pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras, which offer remote-control capabilities to adjust the field of vision. Depending on your particular security needs, you’ll want to consider which types of cameras to use in outfitting your system.  How to choose video surveillance for your Business.

Indoor/outdoor: Some security cameras are made specifically for the indoors and won’t stand up to Mother Nature quite as well as their outdoor counterparts. If you plan to use cameras outside, make sure you purchase models that are weatherproof. Otherwise, water or dirt might interfere with the quality of your video feeds or, worse yet, break your camera. Security cameras might be minimally resistant to weather or completely weatherproof. Be sure to understand what level of protection from natural conditions your security camera offers.

Lighting: Many security cameras are able to shoot in what is known as “low-light infrared,” enabling them to capture clear footage in dark conditions. These cameras rely on infrared LED lights, which cover the darkened area in infrared light. Unlike humans, the camera is able to see this infrared light, so when those wavelengths reflect back, it’s as if the camera is shooting footage in an illuminated room. The more IR LEDs that a camera has, the better it is able to see at night. If capturing footage in the dark is a priority, make sure your camera has plenty of IR LEDs.

Audio: Whether audio recording is an option depends on the particular camera and the manufacturer. Some cameras don’t pick up audio at all, while others do. Some even enable two-way audio, so a person watching the camera on the other end can communicate with a subject in the camera’s field of vision.

Your Video Recorder

Storage capacity: For video recorders, the first question you have to ask yourself is how much storage you will need. The answer hinges on a couple of factors: the number of cameras in your system, each camera’s resolution, the amount of archived footage you intend to store and how long you plan to keep recorded footage. If there are many cameras shooting in a higher resolution, the footage is going to eat up storage space quickly. You can set a video recorder to “overwrite” the oldest footage once you reach the system’s capacity, but if you’re not careful, the system might overwrite archived footage that you still need.   How to choose video surveillance for your Business.

If you’re running a large system that has high-quality cameras, you’ll want to scale up your video recorder’s storage capacity. There are a number of tools online that can help you calculate how much storage space you’ll need based on the details of your system.

For example, a four-camera system that runs 24 hours a day using IP cameras, each with a 2-megapixel resolution and a frame rate of 5 fps, with video compressed into MJPEG files on a NVR, would require 2.79 terabytes of storage space for footage, according to the Supercircuits calculator.

That’s quite a bit of data for a moderate-size system, so it’s important to plan accordingly and know what kind of capacity you’ll really need. It’s also wise to maintain a bit of a cushion beyond that calculated number, so you can store any particularly interesting footage you might need to refer back to.  How to choose video surveillance for your Business.

Cloud storage: Recorded video can be stored on the cloud in addition to on your video recorder. There are a few distinct advantages to doing this, including having remote access to your videos and superior storage volume. It’s important to ensure that uploading large video files is done in a manner that won’t eat up all the available bandwidth and slow down your network. This can be done by either scheduling video uploads to the cloud or uploading them after peak business hours. In addition, be aware that many cloud services charge a subscription fee to use their offerings, especially to store video files in perpetuity. Make sure the company takes the appropriate cybersecurity measures to protect your data. On the plus side, storing videos in the cloud means that even if your hardware is damaged, stolen or tampered with, you’ll still have access to your video archives.

You can get more details on security features at our Security Camera website page from Plano Texas Handyman.

Camera compatibility: Not every video recorder can work with every camera. Of course, DVRs require analog cameras, while NVRs use IP cameras, but the compatibility question extends well beyond that distinction. Some NVR systems, for example, are compatible with the IP cameras only from certain manufacturers and not others. When buying a video recorder, you must first make sure that the device will work with the cameras you’ve purchased. If you’re working with a surveillance system integrator to configure your system, the cameras should be able to provide you with the necessary information.

Compression: Compression is used to eliminate unnecessary data from the footage transmitted to your video recorder, thereby saving space. Two of the more common compression techniques used for high-definition video are MJPEG and H.264. You can also use MPEG4, but the quality tends to be lower than that of MPEG4’s aforementioned counterparts. Compression methods are relatively complex and vary in their applications depending on your needs and hardware.   How to choose video surveillance for your Business.

Your PoE Switches

Power-over-Ethernet switches apply only to NVR systems, but they cut out other components that would be necessary for a DVR system, like additional power sources and the BNC cables used to connect cameras to the DVR. Instead, when you connect a PoE switch to your network, you’ve got a power source and a means of transmitting data to your NVR all in one package. The biggest consideration when choosing which type of PoE switch to buy is the number of cameras that will be on your system. The next consideration is how likely you are to scale up in the future.

Some NVRs will have a handful of PoE ports built into them, while others will not. If you need to buy a PoE switch, the smaller ones start at around $40-$50 and offer about five ports. Each port represents a data connection and a power source for one camera. However, if your plan is to scale up and implement a very large system, there are PoE switches that feature as many as 48 distinct ports.

There are also wireless IP cameras available that require little more than mounting, but those might be less secure than wired connections. If you choose wireless, you’ll need to make sure the signal can’t be easily intercepted. Again, it all comes back to your particular needs and the type of system you’re trying to construct.

New Lightbulbs: What’s the Difference?

Traditional incandescent bulbs use a lot of energy to produce light and are no longer manufactured.

  • 90% of the energy is given off as heat
  • That lost energy is money we are throwing away

Newer energy-saving lightbulbs provide the choices in colors and light levels you’ve come to expect. The new lights are also much more efficient — so they save you money. Energy Efficient Lighting Saves Money

What Are My Lighting Choices?

You have many choices in energy-efficient lighting. The most popular light bulbs available are halogen incandescents, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Although they can initially cost more than traditional incandescent bulbs, during their lifetime they save you money, because they use less energy. You can find these in most hardware and home improvement stores as well as at FSC Lighting.

Controls such as timers and photocells save electricity by turning lights off when not in use. Dimmers save electricity when used to lower light levels. Be sure to select products that are compatible with the energy-efficient bulbs you want to use.

If you have outdoor lighting that is left on for a long time, using CFLs or LEDs in these fixtures will save a lot of energy. Most bare spiral CFLs can be used in enclosed fixtures that protect them from the weather. CFLs and LEDs are available as some of the best outdoor flood lights. These models have been tested to withstand the rain and snow so they can be used in exposed fixtures. Also look for ENERGY STAR-qualified fixtures that are designed for outdoor use and come with features like automatic daylight shut-off and motion sensors.

Halogen Incandescents

Energy Efficient Lighting Saves Money – Halogen incandescents have a capsule inside that holds gas around a filament to increase bulb efficiency. They are available in a wide range of shapes and colors, and they can be used with dimmers. Halogen incandescent bulbs meet the federal minimum energy efficiency standard, but there are now many more efficient options to meet your lighting needs.

CFLs

Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are simply curly versions of the long tube fluorescent lights you may already have in a kitchen or garage. Because they use less electricity than traditional incandescents, typical CFLs can pay for themselves in less than nine months, and then start saving you money each month. An ENERGY STAR-qualified CFL uses about one-fourth the energy and lasts ten times longer than a comparable traditional incandescent bulb that puts out the same amount of light. A typical CFL can pay for itself in energy savings in less than 9 months and continue to save you money each month. A CFL uses about one-third the energy of a halogen incandescent.

CFL bulbs are available in a range of light colors, including warm (white to yellow) tones that were not as available when first introduced. Some are encased in a cover to further diffuse the light and provide a similar shape to the bulbs you are replacing. If you are looking for a dimmable bulb, check the package to make sure you purchase a CFL with that feature.

Fluorescent bulbs contain a small amount of mercury, and they should always be recycled at the end of their lifespan. Many retailers recycle CFLs for free. See EPA’s website for more information. Energy Efficient Lighting Saves Money

LEDs

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are a type of solid-state lighting — semiconductors that convert electricity into light. Although once known mainly for indicator and traffic lights, LEDs in white light, general illumination applications are one of today’s most energy-efficient and rapidly-developing technologies. ENERGY STAR-qualified LEDs use only 20%–25% of the energy and last 15 to 25 times longer than the traditional incandescent bulbs they replace. LEDs use 25%–30% of the energy and last 8 to 25 times longer than halogen incandescents.

LED bulbs are currently available in many products such as replacements for 40W, 60W, and 75W traditional incandescents, reflector bulbs often used in recessed fixtures, and small track lights, desk lamps, kitchen undercabinet lighting, and outdoor area lights. They come in a variety of colors, and some are dimmable or offer convenient features such as daylight and motion sensors. LEDs work well indoors and outdoors because of their durability and performance in cold environments. Look for LED products such as pathway lights, step lights, and porch lights for outdoor use. You can also find solar-powered outdoor lighting. Energy Efficient Lighting Saves Money

While LEDs are more expensive, they still save money because they last a long time and have very low energy use. As with other electronics, prices are expected to come down as more products enter the market.

Installing Energy- 5 Reasons to use Energy Efficient Lighting.

It’s no secret the cost of electrical energy continues to rise and will inevitably continue to do so in the future. At the same time, the demand for electricity continues to increase, taxing our existing electrical infrastructure to the margins of their design limits. We need more power, but in order to get it, we need new transmission and distribution infrastructure – but that’s just the beginning.

Efficiencies need to improve. Smart grid and microgrid strategies need to be deployed, and energy storage needs to be maximized. The list goes on and on. The problem is all of these propositions require a large amount of capital, which seems to be in short supply these days. Therefore, the quickest and least expensive way to generate more electricity is to not consume it in the first place. One way to use less energy is to install newer and more energy-efficient lamps, luminaires, and controls. Even lighting systems that were deployed just five years ago could benefit from newer lighting technologies and/or better control strategies.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that about 461 billion kWh of electricity were used for lighting by the residential and commercial sectors in 2011. This was equal to about 17% of the total electricity consumed by both of these sectors and about 12% of total U.S. electricity consumption. Residential lighting consumption was about 186 billion kWh – or 13% of all residential electricity consumption. The commercial sector, which includes commercial and institutional buildings and public street/highway lighting, consumed about 275 billion kWh for lighting – or 21% of commercial sector electricity consumption in 2011. Installing Energy- 5 Reasons to use Energy Efficient Lighting. Energy Efficient Lighting Saves Money

The good news is lighting has become more efficient over the last decade and continues to evolve. Not only have lamps and luminaires become more efficient, but so have lighting control systems. Installing new luminaires and lamps – or retrofitting existing luminaires and lamps – is standard practice for the electrical industry. However, installing lighting controls to save energy has sent many electrical contractors and technicians back into training mode.

1. Energy Savings – Lamp/luminaire and lighting control strategies are driven by the need to save energy and by the adoption of energy codes like the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), ASHRAE/IESNA 90.1, or state standards like California’s Title 24. As lamp efficacies improve, energy codes are driving down the number of watts per square foot used to light any give space within a building. Add in effective lighting controls, and you can drive down energy consumption even further. On the voluntary side, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), has had a profound impact on driving energy-efficient lighting design as well. Energy Efficient Lighting Saves Money

There are other benefits for installing a well-engineered lighting system. Although the following benefits may appear to be less quantifiable, in reality, they are no less important than saving energy. First is the effect that a lighting system has on improving the productivity, recruitment, and retention of the customer’s employees. The second is green and zero net energy branding opportunities. A 2015 research study, found an average 3.2% increase in productivity from lighting improvements. The same study also revealed that a 1% increase in productivity equates to 100% reduction in energy costs. Energy Efficient Lighting Saves Money

2. Large choice of lighting technology – Lamp and luminaire choice is usually driven by customer request in consultation with an architect, lighting designer, or both to meet occupancy requirements. However, in some cases, the electrical contractor may become the specifier of the lamps and luminaires to reduce costs for the customer (value-engineering). Electrical contractors involved in design/build projects have greater influence over lighting selection. Because most design/build electrical contractors are not lighting designers, learning something about basic lighting design benefits everyone involved.

Just like the lighting designer, the electrical contractor needs to understand the customer’s lighting requirements. In the case of value-engineering or design/build scenarios, realize that the customer may be relying on your expertise when it comes to lamp/luminaire selection, layout, and control. Some basic questions to ask the customer include: What is the major task(s) that will be performed in the space (e.g., task lighting)? What surfaces or objects need to be lit (e.g., focal lighting)? What types of fenestrations will the space contain (e.g., daylighting)? Is any lamp/luminaire going to be used as an architectural or decorative feature (e.g., decorative lighting)? What is the mood of the space, or what are the navigation requirements within the space (e.g., ambient lighting)? In some designs, energy savings and increased productivity may be gained by separating task lighting from ambient lighting and using innovative control strategies.

3. Lighting has become understandable – The proper selection of the lamp and luminaire begins with understanding something about the qualities of a light source, which are determined by the method used to produce the light. Light sources range from incandescent and halogen to fluorescent and HID to light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Lamps are rated in lumen output, watts, and lumens per watt or efficacy. Lumen output is the total light output of the lamp. This does not include fixture lumens only lamp lumens. (It’s important to understand the difference when evaluating LED lamps and luminaires.) Efficacy is the measure of how efficient one light source is when compared to another. The more lumen output per watt of power consumed, the more efficacious the lamp is. When purchasing lamps, think lumens, not watts. Energy Efficient Lighting Saves Money

4. Quality – The quality of light is also a measure of its color accuracy and the color of the light itself. Color accuracy is a measure of how well the light source can render the colors of an object. This is known as the color rendering index (CRI), which is measured on a scale of 0 (very poor rendering) to 100 (perfect rendering). The color of the light the lamp produces (whether the light appears warm, neutral, or cool) is a function of its color temperature. The lower the color temperature, the warmer (more red) the lamp appears; the higher the color temperature, the whiter or cooler the light source appears (more blue). This is known as the correlated color temperature (CCT), as shown in the Figure. Energy Efficient Lighting Saves Money

Other areas of concern when selecting a lamp are its operating temperature range, lamp life, lumen maintenance (how much light output diminishes over the life of the lamp), directionality, dimmability, starting time, and life-cycle costs. All lamp qualities need to be understood to provide the customer with the desired end result. This implies that you, as the electrical contractor, understand how all lamps generate their light and what their operational characteristics are. Control strategies will be predicated on the operational characteristics of the lamp and occupancy requirements. Energy Efficient Lighting Saves Money

The goal is to have a better understanding of the nature of light – not necessarily to become a lighting designer. However, if you are providing design/build services or value-engineering a lighting system, understanding some basics of lighting design will help a great deal. Many lighting and lighting control manufacturers provide basic online training with regard to understanding the nature of light, lamp characteristics, luminaire selection, and the correct switching or dimming control devices and topologies. Many lighting manufacturers also offer webinars and training courses, some of which are free. Staying on top of the latest training resources in the lighting arena will go a long way toward maximizing your next energy-efficient installation.

The annual savings to upgrade to energy efficient lighting

Energy Savings – Assuming you have a 2500 square foot home, with a total of 25 – 60W incandescent bulbs (lamps, fans and bath fixtures), 15 – 65W BR40 spot lights (can lights), and 4 – 4? 40W t40 fluorescent bulbs (closets and laundry).

The total out of pocket cost to replace these bulbs with LED lighting would be approximately $485.00, including professional installation. Installing Energy-Efficient Indoor Lighting Systems

The total annual savings realized based on .11c/kwh would come to $240.00 annually in energy usage, up-front, the payback seems to be 2 years! However, you must consider the longevity and useful life of the asset, LED bulbs last on average 14.7 years compared to 2.1 years for standard incandescent. Essentially, you will have to replace incandescent bulbs 7 times. The bottom line is that over the life of the LED product (14 to 15 years), you will save over $3200.00 in energy usage and bulb replacement.

This analysis is done for a 2500 square foot home, do the math, many homes in Plano Texas are much larger. Your savings could be enormous.

A handyman, or handyman service, usually charges clients an hourly rate, plus material costs, regardless of the task. Many homeowners compile a list of repairs and hire a handyman to complete the list in a single visit.

The term “handyman” is loosely defined. Some are self-trained, while others have formal training in various aspects of construction and home repair. A home handyman might specialize in a few types of home maintenance, such as painting, carpentry, or tiling, while others may have additional skills such as plumbing and electrical expertise.

There’s no national standard or regulation for handymen. Licensing and regulation vary by state. New Jersey, for example, requires handymen who work for a profit to register with the state and carry insurance. California requires handymen to carry a license from the State Contractors License Board to work on any project that exceeds $500 in labor and material costs. Find out before you hire the handyman if he or she has the skills needed to complete your project.

Do you need a handyman or contractor?
The scope of the job and level of skill required to complete it should determine whether you hire a handyman or contractor. Christmas Handyman

“When trying to determine who you should hire for a particular job, consider the task,” says Angie Hicks, founder of Angie’s List. “If it’s a specialized trade, be sure you hire that tradesperson like a plumber or electrician, for example. If it’s little things that you can do yourself, a handyman is probably the right way to go.” Christmas Handyman

A handyman is not the best option for a large or complicated project that could take a long time to complete and requires the help of multiple workers. You shouldn’t turn to a handyman either if you need an emergency service for plumbing, electrical or appliance work, unless the handyman is licensed in that trade. If an unlicensed person does plumbing or electrical work, you have no guarantee that the work has been done to code, which could affect your homeowners insurance policy or any claim related to the work. Use a contractor from this great list here for remodeling work, room additions and projects that require heavy-duty equipment or licensed professionals like electricians.

Why hire a handyman?
You’ve got an ever increasing to-do list of home improvements like changing out a bathroom faucet, replacing missing shingles on the roof and painting a kitchen wall. You could hire a plumber, roofer and painter who have conflicting schedules and their own service charges, or you could hire a handyman to complete all three projects in one day for one hourly rate. Christmas Handyman

Because many handymen charge by the hour, a homeowner can save time and money on home improvement projects by hiring one to complete a wide range of projects at an hourly rate. A service charge from a plumber or roofer to come to your home could equal or even surpass the cost of hiring a handyman for a few hours.

You’re also less likely to be overcharged if your hire a handyman. Unlike a general contractor or specialist who is more likely to price a job based on the estimated amount of time it will take to complete, you only have to pay a handyman for the hours he works, unless you agree on a flat rate. Handymen can keep their rates low because they don’t have to pay additional workers, so they have lower overhead costs than contractors or large companies.

Although handymen have less overhead, they do supply their own tools, so there’s no need to invest in extra equipment you won’t use often or at all. However, you will need to supply the materials. Christmas Handyman

When you hire a contractor or specialist, they usually supply the materials, and often at a markup. If they don’t provide the materials, they may not guarantee a repair, or your choices are limited to what they have in stock. When you choose your own materials, you know how much the product costs, and you can stay within your budget. You also get to choose the manufacturer, finish and register any warranty agreement.

Handymen have been known to do all types of work, from setting up playground equipment and gas grills to hanging holiday lights and decorations.

Ideal jobs for a handyman
Handymen are best utilized for small, “honey-do” types of home repair work. The following projects are ideal for most handymen:

Minor plumbing work: Many handymen are capable of completing small plumbing jobs like installing new fixtures or repairing a leaky faucet. However, complex projects that require relocating plumbing within the home should be left to a licensed plumber. Christmas Handyman

Caulking: Adding a fresh application of caulk to gaps between windows, doors and siding is a great way to improve energy efficiency and lower utility costs.

Decks and porches: Over time, weather can take a toll on wooden decks and porches. A handyman can replace broken boards, apply a finish or sealant and improve or upgrade your deck or porch’s safety and appearance.

Home Automation: We can fully integrate your home into a “smart home”. We have extensive electrical engineering experience and can automate your home easily. Christmas Handyman

Home exterior repairs: If you have minor damage to your home’s exterior, such as a loose piece of siding or a missing shingle, hiring a handyman to repair those items may prove to be more cost-effective than hiring a specialist. Christmas Handyman

Painting and touch-ups: If you have a small painting job, like a wall, garage door, touch-ups of scuff marks or the repair of small holes with spackle, consider a handyman. But remember, a handyman typically charges by the hour, so larger jobs are better suited for a professional painting crew.

Hanging window treatments, pictures and mirrors and installing light fixtures: These small tasks can be easily accomplished by a homeowner. But if you hire a handyman with the right tools and experience, these wall-mounted items will likely be hung correctly and without damage. Christmas Handyman

Tips to hire a handyman
Interview several candidates before hiring a candidate. A handyman works closely with you in your home, so you want to pick one that you feel comfortable being around. Use the following tips to help you choose the best one:

1. Define the project. Start by compiling a list of the home repairs you want completed. Remember, a handyman is best used for small jobs such as installing light fixtures, patching drywall and interior painting. If the job requires pulling a permit, or moving plumbing or electrical wiring, consider hiring a licensed contractor.

2. Shop around. Check Angie’s List reviews and interview at least three handymen. Ask how many years of experience they have and their areas of specialization. Request references from homeowners who have hired them. Make sure the potential handyman has the skills and experience to complete your project.

3. Watch out for scams. Avoid handymen who contact you with unsolicited phone calls or visits to your home. You should also avoid any handyman who refuses to guarantee the price of the job or asks for payment upfront. Reputable handymen don’t expect to get paid before the project is completed. Christmas Handyman

4. Get it in writing. Insist on a written agreement laying out the job details, costs and payment schedule. Be clear about the times you expect the work to be started and completed. It’s extremely important to get all guarantees in writing.

5. Ask for a guarantee. Many handymen will guarantee their work for up to one year. Ask about guarantees before you make a hiring decision, and of course, make sure the guarantee is in writing.

6. Inspect the work. Inspect the completed work before paying the handyman. Make sure that everything has been done to your satisfaction and at the agreed upon price. Most handymen will be happy to explain the finished work because they want you to be satisfied. Christmas Handyman

Home energy savings are indeed possible, particularly if you pay attention to your household appliances. So roll up your sleeves, and take a look at these energy-saving steps recommended by the Department of Energy.

Who knows? This may be the year you finally log some dollars in the plus column, instead of making alarmingly high “contributions” to the utility company.

Water heater savings
Take a bite out of the 18 percent the average homeowner pays for water heating. Here’s how to save on water-heating costs:

When replacing your water heater, invest in a high-efficiency system. Set the water heater to 120 degrees. (Most systems are pre-set to 140 degrees.) Wrap insulation around the first few feet of pipes that come in and out of the water heater. The insulation will reduce energy loss as hot water flows through the pipes. If you’re needing more reasons to insulate your heater and pipes, check out more of the benefits over at https://waterheaterreviewssite.com/water-heater-blanket-benefits/.

The commercial sector, which includes commercial and institutional buildings and public street/highway lighting, consumed about 275 billion kWh for lighting – or 21% of commercial sector electricity consumption in 2011. Installing Energy- 5 Reasons to use Energy Efficient Lighting.

Water conservation
You can save on water heating bills and water bills by adopting a less-is-more mindset. You can adjust your patterns of usage around the house, for example, by taking shorter showers, but it also helps to install low-flow showerheads and aerators throughout the home. These devices reduce the flow of water through them. When you turn on the hot water, the demand is less, reducing usage.

Here are a few other water saving tips:

• Run only full loads when using your dishwasher or clothes washer.

• Avoid using longer-running cycles on your appliances, which will use more water. Opt for shorter washing cycles, but be sure to test these cycles to see if they do as good a job cleaning the dishes as the appliance’s “normal” cycle.

Kitchen money saving tips
Dishwashers, refrigerators, stoves – these are all appliances people use in the kitchen that can contribute to high energy bills – unless you know how to switch on the energy savings:

• Consult the dishwasher manual, and make sure it’s set to the lowest temperature possible (which is generally around 120 degrees).

• Before loading the dishwasher, dry-scrape food off of the dishes, instead of running them under water. You’ll save on water and you won’t have to run the system as long to remove food buildup.

• Avoid using the dishwasher’s soak or pre-rinse features.

• When you can, stop the dishwasher before it reaches the drying cycle, and open the door a bit instead to let dishes air dry.

• Use ideal refrigerator settings to lower energy consumption. The freezer should be kept at 0 degrees, while the ideal temperature for the fridge is between 37 and 40 degrees. If your fridge doesn’t display the temperature, place a thermometer in the space to get an accurate reading.

• Keep an eye on the fridge door’s seal. Leaks increase energy consumption.

• Use a properly sized pan on the stovetop.

• Opt for the toaster when heating food up or even cooking smaller food items. It uses less energy than the oven.

• Regularly clean the stovetop; the burners will work more efficiently when they’re clean.

Laundry energy saving strategies
Keep energy costs down by following these strategies for laundry:

• Hang-dry clothing when you can.

• If you must wash or dry a small load, make sure the settings match the size of the load.

• Always remove lint from the lint trap after drying a load of laundry. A clean lint trap promotes optimal air circulation in the dryer, which will improve drying times.

• If the dryer has a cool-down feature, use it. This feature shuts off the heating element a few minutes before the cycle is expected to end, but the heat in the dryer will remain.

• Make sure the dryer vent is clear, and have a home dryer vent cleaning professional inspect and maintain it every year or two.

• Lint buildup in the dryer is a fire hazard, too. Make sure you know how to put out a dryer fire just in case this ever happens, although you can avoid it through proper maintenance.

With these tips for saving energy, you’ll be set to keep more of your hard-earned dollars over the year, and every year thereafter. When your entire family adopts energy-savings strategies, you’ll also get peace of mind, knowing you’re contributing to a greener environment and conserving natural resources.

Convert Garage to a Mancave

Creating a Mancave

Creating a Mancave: Did you know that garage man caves are therapeutic? I’m just kidding, but in all seriousness, a man cave garage is sure to be the talk of the town and your home within your home. And it does not take a lot of money to create a really nice mancave in your home. Plano Texas Handyman can create the ultimate mancave with great creativity. Call us at 214-507-3415 to discuss your project or visit our website for more information on our capabilities.

Man caves give us the freedom to express ourselves. It gives us the personal space we sometimes need in the middle of the weekly grind we go through 52 times a year. We can fill this space with what we love most, whether that be music posters, comic prints or even photographs. For example, comic fans might fill their walls with Avengers posters and other superhero-themed things. As this is unlikely to be something you’d hang up in the main living room, the man cave is the perfect place for these things. The benefits are endless, but converting a garage into a man cave is certainly easier said than done. Creating a Mancave

That is why I have researched and gathered all the steps one must take to convert and remodel a garage into a dream man cave. Call Ted with Plano Texas Handyman to create the perfect mancave. We have been in business for the last 10 years and can make your dreams into reality. Call us t 214-507-3415 or visit our website for more details.

Rummage through all the junk you have in your garage and make sure each item is something you and your family need. If not, sell it on eBay or throw it out. For the items you do need, you better get smart at organizing. Move it to the basement, below the sink, or in the laundry room. Or better still, clear all the unwanted rubbish from your home altogether by getting in touch with household rubbish removal experts similar to the ones at Inside Outside Rubbish Removal, who are known to have experience in Cheap rubbish removals Melbourne (you could look for similar places near your location). Do whatever you can to clear out space before you turn it into the garage man cave everyone will be talking about.

Insulation
If you’re going to be spending every Sunday in this man cave watching football, then you better have it insulated. That means you need the floors, walls, ceiling, and garage door insulated.

No one said this was going to be easy or cheap. According to our insulation installation cost estimator, most homeowners pay $1,289 for insulation. However, this price is the average of all insulation projects around the house, including the attic. You can expect garage insulation to be less.

One way to save money is by installing the garage door insulation yourself. I mapped out all the steps in How To Insulate A Garage Door. Creating a Mancave

Painting
The insides of garages are not built with design flair. Man caves, on the other hand, require some color and design. That is why your new garage man cave needs a new coat of paint on all the walls.

I don’t care if it’s red, blue, green, or even white, if you’re converting a garage into a man cave, it needs paint. If you need help deciding, make sure you read Popular House Paint Colors For 2014.

Beware, painting an entire garage is a lot of work. There are professionals who specialize in garage painting. Click here to connect with up to four professional painters for free.

Lighting
Most garages have one light installed, but when you’re hosting poker night or your next fantasy football draft, you need to illuminate the room. Creating a Mancave

Flooring
For obvious reasons, the standard garage floor can get cold and unwelcoming, two feelings you would never want for your garage man cave. Concrete floors will not help the situation.

You could add floorboards or even carpet in certain areas (very risky though). Alternatively, you could buy large area rugs, but if you really want your man cave to be the talk of the town, spend the extra cash on a comfortable flooring option.

Protection
We will get into the highlights of your man cave garage momentarily, but we must address the elephant in the room that is security. If you’re going to place your 75″ TV or Michael Jordan jersey in the garage, then you better have good security.

The age-old picture of a man drinking a beer on his recliner in his man cave has not died. However, the modern man cave has evolved and you need comfortable seating for all your friends that can also double as the perfect sleep chair setup, should the beer take hold and you suddenly need to nap it off.

Leave space and electrical outlets for a mini-fridge or a larger one if you can fit it.

Believe me when I say that without a fridge, your friends will not enjoy this man cave.

Memorabilia
No man cave can be complete without its fair share of sports memorabilia. If you have always wanted a place to show off that Derek Jeter ball or a wall to hang that LeBron James jersey, your man cave is it.

If you’re not into sports, add movie posters, pictures of the kids, or anything that makes you happy. It’s your man cave. Be sure to add all the personal flair you want!

Games

A man cave is not complete until you have with you your trusted gaming PC or console. Either of them can provide for you the perfect ambiance for a relaxing time with your friends. Install PC games like Resident Evil 3, Need for Speed, Call of Duty and enjoy a good gaming session. If you’re looking for something like a resident evil 3 iso, you could check out websites like Gamulator, which may provide a wide array of gaming iso files for you to choose from.

Conclusion
Garages are the perfect location for a man cave. If separates the home and your home within your home. It gives you the freedom you demand after a long week. Now that you know what you need, go out and start building or designing your own garage man cave.

Home Theatre Design

Home Theatre Design – So you think you’re ready for a home theater set-up, and you’re quivering with anticipation at the thought of a fully immersive movie experience right in your own home. Sometimes you have no choice but to live a housebound lifestyle due to illness and other means, making a home theatre a perfect addition so you do not feel too trapped within your home, which should be a comfortable place and not a boring one. If you are living a housebound lifestyle currently then perhaps navigating to this website https://www.irenefenollar.com/a-housebound-lifestyle/ could help to give you more tips on coping during this time. However, starting with a home theatre seems like the perfect way to start. But there’s that one nagging question:

Where do you begin?

Contact Ted at Plano Texas Handyman to discuss your Home Theatre Design by calling 214-507-3415. Please visit our website for more information on our capabilities. Our company installs only the best wiring infrastructure to support a pleasurable viewing and listening experience. So what does this mean for your overall quality design. You buy the products and we do the installation saving you a lot of money.

  1. Install a generous 1-1/4″ ENT PVC conduit raceway from the viewing wall to the projector you got from RM Projectors to allow for the HDMI cable. Most companies use 1″ or smaller making it difficult to change HDMI cables.
  2. Install 16 gauge wire for all speakers. Most homes we will run 7 speaker wires and a coaxial/RCA cable for the sub woofer.
  3. Wire all components to make sure everything is working properly.
  4. Offer a 1 year installation on all installed components

There are so many variables to consider, both technical and financial. Consider, for example, that a home theater can set you back anywhere from $1,000 to $25,000 – and more. Or that Amazon lists more than 700 possibilities for home theater speakers. With so many options, rigging up your home theater can be a head-spinning exercise.
But take heart. Even the most non-tech-savvy home theater newbie can do a whole lot to maximize their home theater experience, no matter what the price range. Here’s what you need to know. Home Theatre Design

The Sound for your Theatre

Speaker technology is wonderfully advanced, and competition among top speaker manufacturers has helped turn home theater sound reproduction into a fine art. Which means a system you choose for your home theater is likely to be of very high quality.

Most home theater speaker systems (and movie soundtracks) are designed to provide specific sounds from specific areas of your listening environment. When a train goes thundering through a scene, you hear the sound move from one side to the other. However, speakers labeled as bipole or dipole aren’t compatible with this essential feature of home theater, so check before you buy.

Speaker placement. A typical home theater features 5.1 surround sound, meaning there are five full-range speakers and one low-range specialist, the woofer. others include a 7.1 surround sound, meaning there are seven full-range speakers and one low-range specialist, the woofer. You’ll place three speakers and the woofer toward the front of the room, and the two remaining speakers on either side and slightly behind your viewing position. Keep speakers at least 20 inches from walls.

Let’s not forget that each room is unique, and the best sound for you may come only after experimenting with speaker placement. Fortunately, speakers are moveable.

Ideal distance. In a perfect world, your ears would be equidistant from each speaker. Given that your ears are on opposite sides of your head, it’s safe to say you won’t ever achieve this kind of perfection. Nevertheless, come as close to the goal as you can.

Some speakers – certainly your woofer – will have individual volume controls you can tweak. More sophisticated speakers provide millisecond adjustments, called delays, that time sound projection from each speaker so that everything arrives in your ears at precisely the same instant, a handy feature for large rooms with speakers at various distances.

Audioholics Online A/V Magazine even gives a formula: a 1 millisecond delay equates to 1.1 feet of distance. A speaker 5.5 more feet away from your head than your other speakers would require an advance setting of 5 milliseconds.

Playing center field. Of all your speakers, your center front speaker is perhaps the most influential. It bears the responsibility of projecting sound directly from the screen. This is especially important for dialogue – you don’t want to see the actors talking in front of you while the sound of their voices is coming from the side. Home Theatre Design

Sometimes overshadowed by a pair of sexy tower speakers flanking it, the center speaker shouldn’t be downgraded in your home theater budget. Spend time adjusting your center speaker so that dialogue seems to come directly from your display.

Woof, woof. Your woofer goes up front, but there’s only one, so you have to decide which side. The low bass ranges reproduced by a woofer will permeate the room, so angle is less important than with other speakers. A corner location helps distribute your woofer’s sound evenly but, as with all components, experiment with different positions before settling on the ideal location.

Viewing your Movie

The crown jewel of any home theater set-up is a high-definition display screen. The temptation is to equate size with increased viewing pleasure, but there are limits. You want an immersive experience, but not a display so big you’re swinging your head from side to side in an effort to take in all the action. You’re looking for the right combination of display size and viewing angle. Home Theatre Design

Optimum angle. HDTV manufacturers and home theater experts place the best viewing angle between 30 to 40 degrees. Meaning, if you would draw a triangle from the edges of the display to your nose, the angle of the apex (the angle that points at your head) would be 30 to 40 degrees. This lets you take in all the action with minimal, comfortable eye movement.

Note that if you stay the same distance from your display but move off to the side, the viewing angle gets narrower. If you plan to have multiple seating, make sure all chairs have an optimum viewing angle.
Optimum distance. Ideal viewing angle can be expressed simply as distance, too, usually 1.5 to 2.5 times the diagonal width of your screen. That means you should sit no closer than 7.5 feet from a 60-inch-wide TV, and no more than 12.5 feet away. A viewing distance calculator can help when math skills falter.

Screen: Don’t get wrapped up in high dollar screens. I have seen and installed screens that cost $200 which are as good as screens costing $2000. Home Theatre Design

This formula works in reverse, too. If you know your viewing distance – say it’s 8 feet – then you can select an optimum display size. Eight feet is 96 inches. Divide by 2 (a nice round average of 1.5 and 2.5) and you’ll get 48 inches. So a good HDTV display for your viewing distance would be about 48 inches wide (measured diagonally).

Viewing height. The best viewing height is to have the center of the display screen at eye level. While that might seem elemental, some folks are tempted to elevate the display so that it lords above their theater set-up. If you do elevate your display, tilt it so that it faces your seating area. If your seats recline so that you’re square to the display, so much the better. Home Theatre Design

Your Media Room

Most likely, you know where you’ll locate your set-up. It might be the main living area, a spare bedroom or a basement movie palace complete with a popcorn machine. While each of these spaces has special considerations in terms of comfort and sound quality, there are many common factors.

Room shape. Square rooms tend to produce odd harmonic distortions. If you have the choice, opt for a rectangular room, and plan to place your display screen and main speakers along a short wall for best sound projection. Home Theatre Design

Windows. The fewer, the better. Windows are a double bugaboo: They’re hard surfaces that reflect sound-causing audio distortion, and they admit light that can produce reflections on your viewing surface.
Heavy curtains and shades help, but that means closing blinds or drapes every time you turn on your home theater system. If you must, opt for blackout-style window treatments that track tight against window jambs to seal out light.

Walls. If you’re tempted to staple inverted egg cartons all over your walls to muffle sound, relax. Regular drywall is a decent surface appropriate for home theater walls. However, break up large flat surfaces with furniture or drapes. Don’t add framed art with glass – it’s too reflective of sound and light. Home Theatre Design

Concrete or concrete block is simply a no-no. If you’re setting up in a basement with concrete walls, consider installing studs and drywall.

Other options include acoustic wall panels designed specifically for home theaters. These panels are called “sound absorption” panels, and they help modulate low and high frequencies, preventing echoes. Panels come as 1′ x 1′ or 2′ x 2′ squares costing $4 to $20 per square foot.

Remember sound abatement cuts both ways. Controlling the sound in your home theater room means peace and quiet for the rest of your house. Home Theatre Design

Flooring. Wall-to-wall carpet, with a new cushy pad underneath, absorbs ambient sound and contributes to coziness. Wall to wall carpet can be a pain to clean but with Zerorez Carpet Cleaning Kent it is easier to keep it clean. Kids like to sprawl on the floor to watch stuff, and you never know when some romantic comedies might get you and a loved one rolling on the carpet. With laughter, of course.

Wall/room color. Paint your walls as dark as you can stand them: Bright colors reflect light that’s especially distracting when there’s a brightly lit scene on the screen. Stay away from gloss or semi-gloss sheens, choosing reflection-fighting eggshell or flat paint instead.

Go with neutral browns, tans and olive. Stronger colors, such as red and blue, will give an odd cast to any ambient light and may affect the colors you see on your screen.

Christmas Storage Ideas

Christmas Storage Ideas

Christmas Storage Ideas

Christmas Storage Ideas – So as we embark upon another holiday season, out come the Christmas decorations. And at the end of the year, you embark on the same routine, “What do I do with all this extra stuff that I need to store from year to year”? Answer: Create your Own Self Storage – Why would you pay a self storage facility, on average, $160 per month for a 10×10 unit when you can create usable space in your attic for a fraction of the price. Plano Texas Handyman can convert an average attic space, approximately 200 square feet for about $1500. Christmas Storage Ideas

Call Plano Texas Handyman at 214-507-3415 to talk about your attic remodel or visit our website planotexashandyman.com for all our capabilities. Christmas Storage Solutions.

Consider the facts, we can provide double the space for a payback of 10onths, or less. Consider the following-:

Christmas Storage Solutions

Christmas Storage Solutions

According to The Self Storage Association, there are roughly 49,000 storage facilities in the U.S. alone. Self storage has consistently been the fastest growing area of the commercial real estate industry, representing $22 billion in annual U.S. revenues in 2011. But why? Why are Americans so willing to saddle themselves with material albatrosses that sap their monthly income? Have we become such a nomadic and unsettled people that our consumerism can only keep up with our lifestyles through acres of augmented storage? I’ll leave that up to the social and cultural critics to decide. Although this isn’t an issue that is isolated to the United States. In fact, self storage Auckland has become a very popular choice for the Kiwi’s down under. Alternatively, you could look at other storage options, such as the ability to rent to own sheds for your storage needs. Christmas Storage Ideas

Wish you could utilize all that extra space in your attic to store rarely used items, but aren’t sure how to? Here are some great attic storage ideas I’ve found. Soon, all those Christmas decorations, seasonal sports equipment, and other odds and ends will be organized neatly for easy access, there might also be archival storage by Boom Box Storage to help with storage for decorations. Christmas Storage Solutions

The attic is a great place to store things that aren’t often used but you still want to keep. You know, things like those boxes of Christmas ornaments, your pool toys in winter and boxes of winter gear in summer. The attic is a great untapped storage place. Now, keep in mind that, unlike basements which are damp, attics tend to be very dry. And, this is a no-brainer, but even with lots of insulation, they tend to get warmer than the rest of the house. Christmas Storage Solutions

If you’re considering entering the fray and renting a storage unit, or if you’re rethinking the value you get out of your current storage arrangement, let me offer a few arguments against these businesses that dot our landscape. Here are seven reasons why renting a self-storage unit is a bad idea. (See also: The Tyranny of Stuff) Create your Own Self Storage

1. Most Stored Objects Depreciate in Value
Unless you’re storing gold or silver (an ill-advised move at most storage facilities), the objects you’re housing are probably depreciating in value. Though I know some storage situations are unavoidable (i.e., a last minute move for a job, family emergency, divorce), the pay-off long-term just doesn’t seem worth it when you consider the replacement cost of the stored items. Christmas Storage Ideas

2. Extra Offsite Storage Promotes Acquisition
Having overflow storage options at the ready encourages needless acquisition. Often, storage units enable hoarding tendencies and prevent us from moving on from objects and the places and times in our lives that they represent. Create your Own Self Storage Christmas Storage Solutions

3. Storage Fees Can Be a Financial Drain
This one is obvious, but still insidious. There’s something overwhelming about having a storage unit full of stuff. We tend to ignore it, become exhausted at the thought of moving it, and avoid figuring out how to get rid of it. Inertia sets in and we (almost gladly) fork over the $65.00 or $75.00 a month to maintain the status quo. After a few years of paying our monthly dues, we’ve spent enough to buy to good used car and have nothing to show for it besides the same old anxiety-producing pile of stuff. Christmas Storage Ideas

4. Storage Facilities Often Lack Adequate Security
There doesn’t appear to be any uniform approach to security measures across the self-storage industry. Some facilities are well-lit, some aren’t; some have attendants on-site, some don’t; some units have solid walls and metal doors, others are made of wire and plywood. For an industry that’s basking in the riches of a society on the move, why is there no self-governance, no rating system, Extra Storage Space Your Home.and no standardized security?

5. If You Can Store It for Years, You Can Live Without It
Professional organizers and decluttering experts sing the same refrain — if you haven’t used it in six months or a year, you can live without it. The same logic applies to the objects we’re warehousing in our storage units. If you can box it up and lock it up for years, do you really need it? If it’s not used regularly, what’s its real value?

6. Unpaid Storage Bills Equal Secured Debt
Many folks don’t think about the contents of their unit as security against delinquent storage payments. But it only takes few episodes of “Storage Wars” to be set straight on that point. Unpaid storage fees are made up, in part, by auctioning off the contents of each unit. In many cases, the contents can be sold and renters are still liable for the remaining balance. If you’re storing family photos, heirlooms, or other memorabilia, is it worth the risk to potentially have your items held captive or sold to the highest bidder? Christmas Storage Ideas

7. Storage Services Are a Questionable Value
Considering the cost, the tendency for objects to depreciate in value while in storage, the inertia that off-site storage can lead to, and the lack of uniform security of facilities, I have a hard time seeing the value in long-term storage services. It begs the question — wouldn’t our money be better spent processing and organizing the items we have and purging what’s left over? Create your Own Self Storage, Christmas Storage Ideas.

I realize that self-storage can be like a huge convenience when life throws you a curve ball. But as an ongoing strategy for managing the “stuff” in our lives, it’s a losing proposition. Maybe it’s time to grab a few friends, throw the doors open, load up the trunk, and have a yard sale. Extra Storage Space Your Home
