Smoke Alarms in Single Family Homes

Guide to Replacing Your Smoke Alarm

Smoke Alarms in Single Family Homes – One of the most important things you can do for your family is to install smoke alarms and make sure they have new batteries. Unfortunately, people all around the country die every day simply because they were caught in a fire that could have been avoided if a smoke alarm had been installed. There is never a reason not to have one and if you cannot afford the $10, most fire stations will offer them free.  Contact Ted with Plano Texas Handyman to assess your fire protection plan 214-507-3415.

-Both commercial buildings and homes are required to build and maintain under- certain codes. These codes cover a number of things designed to keep occupants healthy and safe, with the number one being a smoke alarm. The thing to remember is that these codes can and do change. Therefore, if you plan to remodel your home or build a new one, it is crucial that you learn the current codes.

Interestingly, many families are still not sure where the smoke alarms should be placed. Just remember that even for a small home or apartment you need more than one alarm. One area would be inside each of the bedrooms. This way, every family member is protected and not caught by surprise. You can place these on the wall behind the door or in a corner where they will not even be noticed.

Another place is in the hallway, both up and downstairs. Although you will have the protection in each bedroom, you also need to protect the pathway leading into and out of the bedrooms. Make sure you have a smoke alarm in the garage, in stairwells, in rooms with a fireplace, and in the kitchen. In fact, many people will install smoke alarms in each room. Again, they are inexpensive and they do save lives! The only places you would not install a smoke alarm is in an attic or crawlspace. However, if those spaces are ever converted to living space, then you should add one.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), recommends one Smoke Alarm on every floor, in every sleeping area, and in every bedroom. In new construction, the Smoke Alarms must be AC powered and interconnected. See “Agency Placement Recommendations” for details. For additional coverage, it is recommended that you install a Smoke Alarm in all rooms, halls, storage areas, finished attics, and basements, where temperatures normally remain between 40° F (4° C) and 100° F (38° C). Make sure no door or other obstruction could keep smoke from reaching the Smoke Alarms. More specifically, install Smoke Alarms:

On every level of your home, including finished attics and basements.
Inside every bedroom, especially if people sleep with the door partly or completely closed.
In the hall near every sleeping area. If your home has multiple sleeping areas, install a unit in each. If a hall is more than 40 feet long (12 meters), install a unit at each end.
At the top of the first-to-second floor stairway, and at the bottom of the basement stairway.
IMPORTANT! Specific requirements for Smoke Alarm installation vary from state to state and from region to region. Check with your local Fire Department for current requirements in your area. It is recommended AC or AC/DC units be interconnected for added protection.

In addition to the battery-operated smoke alarms, there are also models that are connected and operated from the homes electrical system. Even so, these units have battery backup should you lose power. For this reason, it is important that you remember to keep these batteries current. In most cases, people will set a schedule by which they replace all the batteries at once. This way, they know for sure the batteries are new.

If you have an older home, you can expect that any remodeling will require that you bring things up to code. To do this, permits will be needed. The only time things would be different is if the remodeling project does not include a lot of work opening plaster or drywall on the walls and/or ceiling. This means you would not be opening up the walls where the electrical system could be accessed. In this situation, you would simply use the battery-operated smoke alarm. This investment is one of the best you can make!

Top Reasons Why You Need A Home Surveillance System

Home Cameras - Plano Installation

Top Reasons Why You Need A Home Surveillance System – With the advancement of the technology and the reducing prices of the cameras and other electronic devices, home video surveillance installation has become a common household option. It was just a decade back that such a system was a high tech luxury to a multimillionaire’s mansion.

On the other hand, crime is always on the rise and no one wishes to be left out of any possible protection. People may choose a home video surveillance system for many reasons. Here are five of the top reasons for you to have one for your own house.  Technology is a double-edged sword. While innovation and upgrades can have several benefits for us, they can also be used to cause trouble.

The majority of us reap its advantages, but a few with vested interests continue to abuse it and make the lives for the rest of us miserable.  The security camera is one of the wonders of modern technology, which is used at homes as well as in offices. It has few drawbacks as well.

The advantages, however, outnumber the disadvantages, and this revolutionary equipment continues to be popular with those serious about keeping their loved ones and assets safe and secure. If you’re thinking of installing security cameras at your home or office, but are still in two minds, this post should help clear your confusion.

Feel safe and sleep tight

Most people are afraid of being robbed. It may not be a phobia (such as Harpaxophobia- Fear of being robbed or Scelerophibia- Fear of bad men, burglars) but once in awhile you may also wake up in the middle of the night from a sudden noise. Then you will find it hard to go to sleep without making sure that no one has entered the house. A home surveillance system will be the perfect answer to such worries. With such a system installed, you may visualize the front door, back door and any other possible entry points from the comfort of your bedroom. You can even pay a fee to a security firm and have them monitor the house using your surveillance system all day long. It may cost a bit, but the secure feeling you get from such a system is priceless.

Discourage potential burglars

You may not want to catch criminals and produce them before courts as a service to the community. All you want is to discourage potential criminals from attempting a burglary. If you can install a surveillance system with visible cameras, burglars may very well look for other targets. Some people use dummy cameras for this purpose. These are non-functioning cameras with beeping red lights that give a very close resemblance to real cameras. Only an expert on the close inspection can tell the difference. So, if there are original cameras things get much better.

As court evidence

Most of the time, people get robbed but the burglars leave no trace behind. With a remote home surveillance system you will have hard evidence against the burglars which can be produced before courts. The law enforcement agencies will trace the culprits using your videos. A remote system will record the videos at a distant location so that the burglars will not a stand a chance of destroying any recorded data, even if they turn your house upside down.

Nanny cameras

Some parents can never be fully assured unless they have a direct view of their children; nanny camera is the answer to such anxious parents. You can install a nanny camera at your child’s room and monitor the activities from your mobile, tablet or laptop even if you are many miles away. You will catch an unattended child, a nanny abusing your child or any other emergency at home and have options to act on accordingly.

Stay informed

Other than the advantages given above, some people just want to stay informed. They prefer to know who’s by the front door before they walk out from their bedroom. If you feel the same then you may appreciate a surveillance system which shows you who are walking through the gate and who are standing by the door long before you stand up from your chair. Advantages of a home surveillance system are many. In the modern world you will never be fully secured without one. And with the current prices one has little argument for not having one either. So buy a home surveillance system today, if you are one of the few people not to have one already gained immense popularity as an effective security measure, thanks to the plethora of benefits it offers.

Advantages

1. Deter Crime
This is the biggest and the most obvious benefit of installing security cameras. Once they are placed, you will be able to see their effect on people almost immediately. Even if they are placed discreetly, you will start feeling a sense of security, which is priceless. Whether you install the cameras in your home or at the workplace, you can prevent crime from occurring. The mere sight of the camera staring back at them, and the sheer thought of getting caught red-handed are intimidating enough for mischief-makers to be on their best behavior as they would know that their identity and illegal activity have been captured. Whether you’re experiencing problems related to theft, punctuality, or productivity, your security camera can provide you with the solutions. It empowers you and prevents your home and office from becoming easy targets.

2. Monitor Scenarios and Activities
It is extremely easy to work with security camera systems as they can be placed anywhere as long as there is a power source close by. They come in all shapes and sizes; some are tiny enough to be hidden in plants, pictures, photo frames, etc. Depending on your needs you can buy either hidden cameras or mountable ones. Never let anyone or anything suspicious out of your sight with security cameras. And while it is recommended that you avoid buying dummy cameras, one cannot stress enough on the importance of fixing real cameras as a solid security measure. Criminals are smart and dummy cameras give themselves away, so there’s really no point in having them. Real cameras, on the other hand, are extremely helpful as they enable you to monitor the activities of people visiting your home and office as well as the goings-on at these places. This is a great way to detect suspicious people and keep tabs on their activities.

3. Arrive at the Right Decisions
Footage from security cameras can help you make correct and fair decisions when settling disputes, both in domestic as well as professional scenarios. Whether it is dealing with a situation involving disagreements within your family, among your employees, or between a customer and your service staff, your doubts can be laid to rest with the help of your camera. Incorrect, inappropriate or fabricated claims made by customers or other authorities can be sorted out when you make your security camera your ally.

4. Maintain Records
So you got to know of something that happened outside your home or office about a fortnight ago and curiosity is getting the better of you? You can douse it by simply looking up your security records. Cameras record and document everything they see systematically, i.e. as per the date and the time of the event. Whether it is a crime or a minor tiff, your camera chronicles it, thereby making it easy for you to investigate the actual happenings.

Disadvantages
1. Privacy Is an Issue
There have been a few instances in the past where security cameras have stirred up controversies, especially in professional setups. There have been cases where employees have objected to being under constant surveillance without their permission and citing the ‘invasion of privacy’ as the reason. A few have also resorted to taking legal action against their employers in relation to this. Critics of security camera systems have taken offense to them being placed in offices and argued that doing so implies that the employer has either already assumed or is convinced that his employees are up to no good and will do something wrong which is why their activities need to be recorded.

2. It Can be a Costly Affair|
While dummy cameras may not be expensive, the real ones costs hundreds, even thousands of dollars depending on the features and the number of cameras and monitoring systems you buy. Getting them installed and their maintenance means added costs. If you’re thinking of installing them yourself, lay that idea to rest unless you have good knowledge of wiring systems or you may end up damaging the cameras.

3. They Can be Vulnerable
When we, as users of security cameras, try to keep ourselves updated on the latest in security systems, we should not forget that intruders and criminals are doing the same too. A clever trespasser will probably know all about them and may have figured out a way to go undetected. Further, tech-savvy criminals might have understood the technology and worked out ways to disable/disconnect them from their power source. Plus, if he detects your cameras as fake/dummies, they can be utterly useless in any crime prevention. In worst cases, hackers can play havoc with your security camera system by using the Internet and use them to spy on you instead. This makes security cameras vulnerable to damage and/or misuse.

4. Can’t Stop Theft
Cameras enable users to record footage for later viewing, and to help nab criminals, and receive justice from the law. They cannot, however, stop a crime when it is in progress. They do not alert neighbors or the police like an alarm system would. This means that you will incur losses even as you run to the court, make insurance claims and reorder stolen inventory, which may no longer make you feel absolutely safe and even cause you to lose faith in them.

Conclusion
Before making the important decision of installing security camera systems, it is better to be equipped with complete knowledge about them, as that will enable you to make an informed decision and help you choose a camera that fulfills your needs and expectations. Once you’ve weighed the pros and cons of setting up this technological marvel, you will feel better about your choice.

Determine the Size of Pet Door You Need

Pet door manufacturers such as High Tech Pet, Ideal, Petsafe and others classify there pet doors into small, medium, large, extra-large and sometimes super-large sizes. If you are the proud owner of one of the best dog breeds under 30 pounds, you will not require any of the larger door options. Cat doors usually come in standard “cat flap” or larger hefty cat sizes. For the very “well fed” cats, a small dog door size may be more suitable. To determine the door size, first determine the minimum flap size. Do this by making the following measurements on your doggie.

Measure the widest part of your dog. Usually, this will be the width across the shoulder. Add 2″ to this measurement. This will be the minimum flap width you need. Next, Measure the distance from the top of your dog’s shoulder blades to the belly. Add 3″. This will be the minimum height of the flap you need. Select the size doggie door with a flap that has both its width and length measurements greater than your corresponding minimum width and length requirements.

Decide Where You Wish to Install Your Dog Door

Your choices are door installation, wall installation, installation in a sliding glass patio door, garage door, screen door or window. When installing in walls, it’s best to use the manufacturer’s wall installation kit. If the manufacturer does not provide this as an option, we suggest you chose another model that does unless you really love the particular doggie door and you are sufficiently skilled to build an interior frame to seal off the hole you will be making in your wall to install the dog door. Determine the Mounting Height:

Measure the height from the floor to the top of your dog’s shoulder blades. Add 1″ to determine the mounting height of the top edge of your doggy door. Installing a Pet Door

How to Install a Dog Door in a Door:

Notes:When installing in a household door, you may find it desirable to remove the door from its hinges and lay it on saw horses when cutting the opening and installing the dog door.
For installation in steel doors or other types of metal doors, we recommend you have it done by a pet door installation professional with supplies from this fastener shop.

Step 1 – Mark the Corners:Many doggy doors come with a paper template included. If there is no template included, you can use the lock out slide panel as your template. Cut the template out. On your household door, measure from the bottom and place a mark at the mounting height dimension and draw a horizontal line. Place the top of your template on the line and tape it in place. Mark an X at each of the four corners. If there are holes for mounting Shoulder Bolts shown on the template, mark those holes too. Installing a Pet Door

Step 2 – Drill Holes at Each Corner:

Drill a hole at the X mark in each corner. If your doggie door requires screws to fasten the frame to your door, drill out those holes using the drill bit size recommended in the manufacturer’s instructions. (Typically, this 1/16″ smaller than the screw, For example a 1/4″ screw will require a 3/16″ drill bit.)

Step 3 – Mark the Opening:

With your pencil and straight edge, draw a straight line between each corner hole using the outside diameter of the holes.

Step 4 – Cut Out the Opening:

Now, use your jigsaw or circular saw to cut out the opening. With the jigsaw start at one corner. Insert the blade into the hole and cut along the line to the next hole. If you are using a circular saw, start at one corner just below the hole and cut along the line to the next hole. Continue at each corner hole until the opening is cut out.

Step 5 – Install the Outer Frame:

On the exterior surface of your door, insert the pet door’s outer frame into the opening. Fasten in place with mounting screws if required. From the interior side of your household door, use calk to seal all around the outer frame.

Step 6 – Install the Inner Frame:

On the interior surface of your door, insert the pet door’s inner frame into the opening. Fasten in place with mounting screws.

Step 7 – Remount Your Household door:

If you chose to remove your household door for this installation, remount the door on its hinges. Contact Ted at Plano Texas Handyman for a professional installation at 214-507-3415

How to Install a Pet Door in a Wall:

Step 1 – Locate the Wall Studs:

On the interior wall locate the wall studs in the area where you will be mounting your pet door by tapping or using a stud finder. The doggie door must go between these studs. You must be certain there are no electrical wires, water or gas lines between the studs in this area. Installing a Pet Door

Step 2 – Mark the Top Mounting Edge:

Measure from the floor to the top mounting edge using the mounting height dimension you determined above. Draw a horizontal line to establish the top mounting edge.

Step 3 – Mark the Opening:

Cut out the manufacturer’s paper template, Align the top edge of the template with your line and, using your pencil and straight edge, trace the opening. If no template is provided, use the pet door’s lock out slide panel as a template.

Step 4 – Making the Interior Cut-Out:

Now, use your jigsaw or circular saw to cut out the opening in your drywall. Start at one corner. Insert the blade into the hole and cut along the line to the next hole. If you are using a circular saw, start at one corner just below the hole and cut along the line to the next hole. Continue at each corner hole until the opening is cut out. When all 4 cuts are made, remove the cut drywall. Remove any insulation or other matter between the studs. Make sure there are no electrical wires, gas or water pluming that will interfere with your dog door installation. Installing a Pet Door

Step 5 – Drill Corner Holes in the External Wall:

Working from the inside wall mark an X on the inside of the exterior wall corresponding to each corner of your cut-out. These will be the corner points of your exterior wall cut-outs. Drill a hole at each mark. Note, if you are drilling through stucco or masonry, you may need to use a masonry drill bit. Also, you may need the services of a masonry contractor, so don’t hesitate to give them a call.

Step 6 – Making the Exterior Cut-Out:

Working from the outside of your home, make lines between each drilled hole. With your circular saw and masonry blade cut along the lines from hole to hole. When completed, remove the cut wall material and clean debris from the inside.

Step 7 – Drill Mounting Holes:

Using the manufacture’s template, drill all mounting holes using the manufacturer’s recommended drill bit sizes. If you do not have a template, use the frames containing the mounting holes as a template. Drill all holes in internal and external walls. Installing a Pet Door

Step 8 – Custom Wall Tunnel:

Hopefully, the manufacturer provide a wall installation tunnel with the doggie door. If so, skip to Step 9. If not, you will need to build an inner frame to seal off the opening using plywood or 2 X 4 lumber. The frame should fit snuggle between interior and exterior walls. It should be caulked to prevent moisture entering between your wall studs.

Step 9 – Install Outer Frame:

Install the outer pet door frame by inserting into the exterior opening and securing with screws in each mounting hole.

Step 10 – Install Manufacturer’s Wall Tunnel:

If the manufacturer provided a wall tunnel, now is the time to install it by fitting it into the outer dog door frame. This should be done from the interior wall.

Step 10 – Install Inner Frame:

Install the inner doggie door frame. This is usually the one containing the flap. Fit the inner frame to the wall tunnel and secure it to the inside wall by inserting a screw into each mounting hole.

How to Install a Sliding Glass Patio Pet Door:

Start by purchasing one of our great, easy to install patio pet door inserts. These pet door inserts include the pet door of your choice mounted in our preassembled tempered glass inserts that drop right into your sliding glass patio door frame. Step 1:

Insert the pre-made glass panel onto the track of your sliding glass door.

Step 2:

Release the spring loaded top with the 2 thumbscrews and it automatically adjusts itself to the height of your door.

Step 3:

Push the panel against the inner wall and tighten the thumbscrews.

Step 3:

Carefully peel and apply the weather stripping along the edge of the POWER PET door to provide a seal between the POWER PET door and the sliding glass door.

Step 4:

Carefully peel and apply the weather stripping along the edge of the POWER PET door to provide a seal between the POWER PET door and the sliding glass door.

Step 4:

Apply the draft stopper to the back of your sliding glass door.

Step 5:

Before mounting the locking mechanism, remove any screws that might obstruct attachment on your sliding door.

Step 6:

Position locking pin as low as possible on the edge of the sliding door while still being able to push and pull the pin for locking and release. Mark where a hole should be drilled in the stationary sliding door to accept the pin when the sliding door is closed tightly against the PX-SGL Pet Door. Installing a Pet Door

Step 7:

Drill the hole first using a 1/8 inch drill bit and then finishing with a 1/4 inch drill bit. (Figure 6) Be careful to not penetrate the drill bit beyond the frame material (aluminum or PVC). Drilling too deep may damage the glass or the glass seal. Drill just deep enough to create a 1/4 inch hole for the pin to engage.

Step 8:

Insert the lock pin in the drilled hole and hold the lock in position while you mark the two mounting slots on the edge of the sliding door. (Figure 7) When doing this, position the lock so that it will not interfere with anything while opening and closing the door.

Step 9:

Remove the lock and using a 1/8 inch drill bit, drill pilot holes for two screws to hold the lock to the sliding door. Drill only deep enough to produce a hole in the sliding door frame. Drilling too deep may damage the glass or glass seal.

Step 10:

Position the lock with the pin extended into the 1/4 inch hole, and fasten the lock to the door using two supplied self-tapping screws. Operation: Pull the pin to allow opening of the door. Close the door and push in the pin to lock the door closed. Contact Ted at Plano Texas Handyman for a professional installation at 214-507-3415

Bathroom Design Planning

Bathroom Design Planning

Bathroom Design Planning – It’s one of the first rooms we see in the morning and one of the last rooms we see at night. It’s certainly among the most private rooms in the house, and the finishes, fixtures and mechanical equipment required by even a simple bathroom place it among the most expensive real estate in the house – especially from credible services like https://newkitchenrenos.ca/bathroom-vanities/. Given the intimate nature of bathrooms and the frequency with which they are used, I think their design and detailing should also impart a measure of emotional well-being to their users. In this spirit, I offer ten suggestions for making a good bathroom that can enhance some of your everyday experiences. Please note: bathrooms require intricate planning and expertise from professionals when carrying out the technical aspects of the job. You may want to check it out online to get an understanding of what I’m talking about.

An entrance transition. Except for the so-called master bath, most bathrooms serve several users and need to be placed in a location central to these users, usually halfway between the private parts of the house and the more public parts. Don’t have a bathroom with multiple-door access. Bathroom Design Planning

Instead, create an entrance with a space outside the door — maybe an alcove off the hallway that gives some privacy from the main rooms or circulation area and with a little room inside the door before reaching the bathroom fixtures roomlike proportions. Too many bathrooms are simply hallways with the fixtures lining one side of the hall. It is hard to make a pleasant room of that shape. First, a good room is roughly square or rectangular with length-to-width proportions not exceeding 2:1. In almost every good room, there is a clear central space, a center with smaller spaces like alcoves around the edges. A bathroom can be designed by bathroom remodeling Baltimore using these principles in miniature. There can easily be a central space that contains the entry, with some elbow room for washing and drying off and with alcoves around the edges for the toilet, the shower or the tub. Bathroom Design Planning

A good window. Natural light and a view to the outside are important in the bathroom. Our first understanding of the weather and the general look of the day comes in the window. Ideally, windows are on at least two sides of the room to provide even daylighting. If privacy is an issue, make multiple windows face a courtyard garden, perhaps with an outdoor shower. If you have room for only one window, place it where it illuminates the portion of the room that you see when you enter. If you’re looking for a great window repair and replacement company, check out Window Replacement DC – Reston.

From the least intimate places to the most intimate places
Another principle that applies to residential design in general and to the bathroom in miniature is “the intimacy gradient.” Just as you locate the bedrooms the farthest from the front door, you should locate the most private part of the bathroom the greatest distance from the entry to the room. The most private part varies from family to family, with the toilet being the most private for some and the bath for others. Bathroom Design Planning

Borrowed views
In a small space such as a bathroom, it is difficult to get a direct view to the outside from each space. But it is possible to borrow the view across another space or another fixture. A shower is a good example. It needs to be enclosed with water-resistant materials. So a window in a shower with an exterior wall, particularly a beautiful wood window, is not an ideal candidate for part of a shower enclosure. There are a number of positions that the shower can take in the bathroom that will allow for a good view through a clear glass shower door.

Pay attention to vertical and horizontal dimensions
Certain minimum clearances around bathroom fixtures are required by every building code. My own experience is that you need about 36 in. of elbow room at the lavatory to use it comfortably. Its counter is typically between 31 in. and 34 in. high. The rule: You want the water to run off your wrists, not your elbows. A double-lavatory arrangement is mostly ornamental unless it has 6 ft. of counter space.

A toilet compartment is tight at the code minimum of 30 in., about right at 36 in. and a waste of space after that. In fact, after 40 in., you lose touch with the walls on each side and the sense of enclosure they provide. Although the minimum dimension for a shower stall is 30 in., it must also have no less than 1,024 sq. in. of finished interior area. This amount is really minimal, and I wouldn’t recommend less than 36 in. square, or a 30-in. by 48-in. rectangular shower if you can find the room…The standard length for a tub is 60 in., and many are 66 in. and 72 in. long. If you get a deep, rounded-back claw-foot type, you can easily be comfortable with a 54-in. or a 56-in. long tub unless you’re taller than 6 ft. I recommend, however, that you make an honest evaluation of whether you really ever use a tub and consider instead putting money into a nice shower. Bathroom Design Planning

Just as any good room benefits from a variety of ceiling heights, so does a good bathroom. Make the ceiling highest in the center, and lower it around tubs, showers, toilet alcoves and window seats.

Any small room like a bathroom can benefit from the visually expansive effects of horizontal lines. This is often seen in traditional bathrooms as a strong cap on top of wainscoting. The lower part of the wall is done in a water-resistant finish such as tile or enamel paint and is capped by a strong horizontal band with plaster or wallpaper above. This horizontal band combined with a baseboard and sometimes a crown molding at the ceiling adds horizontal lines that visually enlarge the perimeter of the room. Two vertical dimensions are often the subject of discussion and sometimes construction changes. The first is the height of sconces. I prefer a framed mirror above a lavatory with sconces on the side because they give the best light to the sides of the face and fewer shadows in the facial recesses than light from above the face. The height I use for sconces is the height of my client. Bathroom Design Planning

The last vertical dimension is one of those little details that gives me problems near the end of a project: the water supply to the toilet. Place it high enough, including the escutcheon, to be out of the baseboard. I’ve found that 10-1/2 in. is enough to clear all but the tallest baseboards and still leaves room for a flexible connection to the toilet tank.

Water-resistant finishes. There is probably nothing nicer than ceramic tile in a bathroom. Properly installed, it is a cleanable, water-resistant surface for floors, walls and shower enclosures. If a whole wall need not be water resistant, ceramic tile can also make a beautiful wainscot. On floors, it can be colder on the feet than other materials, such as wood, but a simple area rug or a more expensive heat pad under the tile can easily solve this objection. Too much tile can change the acoustics of a room, and you should keep to softer materials on the ceiling and a portion of the walls (or have lots of bars for big fluffy towels) have used wood floors in many bathrooms, and with today’s tough floor varnishes, they can hold up well to a modest amount of water as long as it is not allowed to sit on the floor for a long period of time. It seems a little uncomfortable putting a toilet directly on a wood floor, so I use a transition pad made of a scrap of granite or marble for toilets on wood floors. Bathroom Design Planning

Another attractive, traditional bathroom-floor material is linoleum. It is nothing like today’s vinyl plastics. Again, proper installation is important for resistance to water. The only wall surfaces that truly need to be water resistant are the shower walls. There are a variety of useful materials ranging from one-piece molded enclosures to wall-size sheets of materials to individual pieces such as tile. In every instance, installation is critical, particularly at joints, to the ultimate success of the material.

It is helpful to have an easily cleanable surface around the lavatory on the countertop and on the walls immediately around the sink. Ceramic tile is a good choice. Natural stone, polished and sealed concrete, and other nonabsorbent materials work well on both surfaces. On walls, a good-quality enamel paint on smooth plaster makes a cleanable, water-resistant finish.

Fixtures that really work
To me, good-quality bathroom fixtures mean enameled cast iron for tubs and china for lavatories. I recently remodeled the two bathrooms in my 1929 cottage. After 70 years, it was finally time to replace the original enameled cast-iron tubs. Cast iron and china are still so commonly used that the price difference between these quality fixtures and bargain fixtures is modest.

Good fittings such as faucets and tub/ shower valves, however, are noticeably more expensive than run-of-the-mill fittings, sometimes as much as triple the cost. I use them, however, whenever I can afford to put them in the budget because over their life, they are still a bargain when compared with average fittings that last a far shorter period of time. I also have to admit that there is no other faucet that gives me the pleasure of use as a classic Chicago or Rudge faucet. For finishes, stay with tried-and-true nickel or chrome without the plastic coatings. Someone’s going to have these faucets in 50 years if you make the correct choice…One piece of equipment that has improved during the past few years is the exhaust fan. They are clearly quieter than five years ago. Companies such as Broan and NuTone have ceiling-mounted, barely audible exhaust fans. Speaking of noise reduction, the newer “coexcel” ABS plastic drain pipe seems to be quieter than the older ABS. But nothing can replace cast iron for quietness in a drain pipe that comes down the wall of a first-floor living space. The slight increase in material cost is more than offset in the long run of the life of the house.

Important accessories
Light fixtures, towel bars, medicine cabinets, furniture, switch-plate covers, shower doors — there are hundreds of opportunities to make decisions about these kinds of details in a bathroom. My advice: Keep them simple and straightforward. Buy good quality that will last a long time. Keep them related to each other in design and materials, except for the occasional humorous surprise. Look for timeless qualities. Choose things that you want to live with. There is no reason you can’t enjoy even the most mundane item in your bathroom…10. The lost art of bathing. The previous suggestions will help you to make the ordinary bathroom that you use several times each day a pleasant, enjoyable place. Sometimes, though, you want to go beyond that and experience the real pleasure of bathing. The deep relaxation of hot water, the peaceful pleasure of bathing with family or friends, and the therapy of quiet immersion in water are all aspects of the art of bathing. The oversize master bathrooms in the pseudomansions of the late 20th century only hint at this fundamental human need. The essence has been lost in the cheap materials typically used to build them.

To re-create this experience requires a deep, profound examination of the history and tradition of bathing and the environment needed to support it fully. My sense is that the quality of the room as a space–with places to sit around the perimeter, with good natural light and with good connections to a private outdoor space — are paramount to creating this experience..

Decorating with Travertine Tile

In recent years more and more home owners use natural stone in bathrooms for flooring, wall mosaics, vanity tops and tub surroundings. The key question here is to decide on the stone and the type of the stone according to the application.

Marble travertine and limestone  add a sophistication and luxury to the look of a bathroom.

Travertine Tiles
Few material offer the warmth that travertine does. Travertine applications in bathrooms result in an rustic and luxury character in bathrooms.

According to the rdtiling.ie website, travertine tiles can be used in showers, floors as well as walls in bathrooms.  For bathrooms, hone finished or tumble finished travertines are the best choices. These two finishes are ideal for bathrooms due to their ability to withstand spills most likely to occur in bathrooms.

Travertine tiles offer  a high variety of color and design options are nearly endless.

1. Choosing the right travertine for your room
Travertine is commonly mistaken for marble or limestone but in fact is a form of rock with sedimentary properties and has a beautiful buffed matte finish that can’t be matched by many other natural stone materials. When choosing the right travertine for your room ask a professional what varieties of colors, variegations and application suggestions they recommend. You will be surprised that travertine can be obtained in small mosaic tiles all the way up to large slabs for walls and countertops. Decorating with Travertine Tile

2. Make a grand entrance with travertine tile floors
If you’re looking to add a luxurious aesthetic to your grand foyer, look no further than travertine. Known for its uneven or chiseled qualities, travertine looks gorgeous in traditional and modern homes alike. Whether you choose to place travertine mosaic tiles or use large pavers. There aren’t many floor materials that can create a rustic yet sophisticated look to your entry.

3. Large scale travertine can bring out the drama
If you love a big and bold look to your bathroom why not try travertine in a large scale format? This vein cut travertine tile is sold by the slab and its beauty is enhanced since every slab is unique and designed by nature. If you prefer to keep the travertine confined to one special area of your bathroom, look to the shower, backsplash behind the vanity or in a shower dressing room area. Take a look at this Travertine home in Singapore, what a beautiful way to show off this versatile material.

4. Bring out the nature of your design style
Travertine is a very ancient material dating back generations and was used in many monumental buildings throughout the world. While it has historical connections, it also is used in the most posh and modern homes today. Determine what your style of travertine suits your interiors. From sleek and sexy with very few grout joints in a minimalist backsplash to a traditional layout with chiseled edges, you will have a challenge selecting just one type in your interiors!

5. Tips to remember when choosing travertine
Due to the various patterns on the tiles, it makes it very obvious if the tiles aren’t level when they’re installed. So, if you’re going to be adding these tiles to your bathroom then take a look at Tiler Place’s guide to using a tile leveling kit properly to ensure they are installed the correct way on the first attempt.

Also, one of the beauties of this gorgeous stone is its varied colors and patterns but one draw back is its ability to scuff and scratch easily. Depending on the surface finish a high polished travertine may resist better than a matte finish. Travertine also can be porous and shouldn’t be used where levels of oil and other liquids can soak into it and stain its beauty. Although just like marble and granite a tile specialist can direct you to what type of travertine stone tile is best for your project.  Decorating with Travertine Tile

6. Travertine in your luxurious bathroomTile
Dating back centuries ago Travertine has become a building material that is tried and true and your bathroom is the perfect place to showcase its versatility. From travertine mosaic tiles on your shower walls to custom tile work patterns, you will love its versatility. Travertine tiles set on a diagonal can give a gorgeous diamond geometry that when coupled with its natural matte finish will transform any shower stall from ordinary to luxurious.

7.  Add sophistication to your outdoor home
Travertine can not only beautify your interiors but your outdoor home as well. Whether you are looking for garden pathway stepping stones or making decorative knee walls, you will love the versatility. On top of this, if you’ve recently been on CaliforniaPools.com to get a pool installed, travertine makes a great border to the pool.  Travertine like many other natural stones can keep its beauty through long summer and winters and will age beautifully with time.

8. Polished travertine can add a luxurious tone
There is an air of luxe detailing when your bring polished travertine into your home and what better way to do it than in an indoor/outdoor room? Large pavers used with thin grout lines give the illusion of a vast vista of travertine as far as the eye can see. Pair it with your favorite outdoor furniture, a summer kitchen and an outdoor fireplace and your home will enjoy the rave reviews from guests in your entertaining spaces.

9. Combining light and dark finishes to add drama
To add a luxurious play between the materials in your home consider pairing lighter tones of travertine against your dark wood cabinetry for a dramatic touch. The contrast between the colors and textures of the finishes can create a kitchen, bathroom or living space that exudes attention. Similarly with your living room and dining room furniture. A killer dining room table or coffee table in rich mahogany wood will look dynamic against a lighter variety travertine floor. Decorating with Travertine Tile

10. Travertine can create a showstopper kitchen
Your kitchen is that one room where you pull out all the stops to showcase the appliances and finishes, and travertine used in kitchen backsplashes, countertops and flooring can wow and party that you are throwing! Look to travertine mosaics for custom details for your stove wall backsplash. Consider enlisting an artisan to create a one-of-a-kind backsplash for your kitchen walls with travertine tile. The options are endless and the ability to redefine your luxurious home with this versatile material is all up to you!  Contact Ted with Plano Texas Handyman at 214-507-3415 for design ideas on decorating with travertine tile.
